Area Facts

Town Information and Website Links

Welcome to the Special Areas. It truly is a wonderful place to live and visit. Don’t be fooled by the big sky, wide open spaces and rural lifestyle that are second to none.

The whole area is served by wireless high-speed internet. Young entrepreneurs are plugged in and connected to the world from their front porch. A technology revolution is happening and Special Areas is part of it.

Friendly-passionate people, wide-open spaces, clean air and endless blue skies will make your heart skip a beat when you’re in Alberta’s Special Areas, a unique municipal area covering approximately 2.1 million hectares in the south central part of the province. There are three Special Areas; Special Area 2 based out of Hanna, Special Area 3 based out of Oyen and Special Area 4 which is based out of Consort and located in the northern region on the Special Areas map. Check out our map section for a visual reference!

Special Area #2, #3, #4
The Special Areas offers crisp air, open skies and endless prairie. As a setting for the family farm and charming hamlets, the soft flowing uplands contrast into deep badlands, coulees and river hills. While reflecting its semi-arid locale, the Special Areas boasts lakes and campgrounds in a quiet atmosphere.

Town of Oyen
Recreation and Oyen go hand in hand. Enjoy a round of golf at Oyen & District Golf Club or a day of play at Shirley McClellan Aquatic Center. This small town service center has many places to eat, play and stay.

Village of Veteran
Quaint accommodations provide the opportunity for visitors to relax and live the small town lifestyle in Veteran. Reenergize yourself with a meal from Red Seal Chief Lisa Long and don’t forget to get some treats to take home with you!

Town of Hanna
A dramatically transformed 18 hole golf course awaits the recreation enthusiast at the Town of Hanna. This imaginative and challenging course is truly “Worth the Drive!”
